Abstract

Positioned from the perspective of the so called first wave of ecocriticism, we may identify Gabriela Mistral’s poetry with conservation nostalgic poetry encompassing transcendentalist tones. We may as well identify her work to later advancements in green cultural studies such as an active commitment to environmental justice. Along Poema de Chile, Mistral reveals affinity with the conservation of native flora and fauna, together with all our national geography, composed into a particular landscape that is committed to our mestizo farmers, “campesinos”, and all of the native peoples who have been erased from Chile’s official map and discourse.
