FORMS OF BETRAYAL IN TESTIMONIES OF IMPRISONMENT AND TORTURE IN CHILE

Abstract

This article seeks to show the different ways in which betrayal is presented in Chilean testimonies of political
imprisonment and torture. In order to do so, we distinguish degrees and ways in which this phenomenon
appears in the texts. In the first place, certain passive forms of betrayal can be observed, that is, forms
of betrayal that are characterized by a non-doing. Here we find such forms of betrayal as refusing help
to one who is in need, being ungrateful to a benefactor, as well as abandoning friends and companions.
Then, we distinguish forms of betrayal characterized by direct action. Here, first of all, we find forms of
betrayal linked to speaking, among which informing is the most prominent. Finally, we move on to other
forms of betrayal that go beyond telling and move on to other forms of doing, such as collaboration and
even conversion.
