Abstract

Residence on Earth is the most experimental work of Pablo Neruda (1904-1973). Many critics have mentioned Neruda’s year in Asia (1927-32) as triggering the collection. During his time in Asia, Neruda smoked opium and he wrote about these experiences. This article focuses on the possible narcotic inluences of opium in Residence on Earth, highlighting the way in which critics have actively denied Neruda’s use of opium as inspiration. This article also emphasizes a diferent version of Neruda (not political nor romantic) and how the poet uses opium as a sign to mark/ distinctive divisions in his poetry
