Abstract

This article seeks to explore the dynamic between symbolic production, consumption and memory, trying to connect empirical observations with theoretical approaches of the religious phenomenon. From qualitative work done in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, I discuss similarities and divergencies of Pierre Bourdieu´s religious field and Daniéle Hervieu-Léger´s religion as a chain of memory. The discussion finds, on one hand, a deliberative use of memory in the symbolic production of St. Francis of Assisi, and, on the other hand, a multiplicity of senses of memories evoked by this Saint in the Galapagos.
Keywords: memory, religious field, symbolic production, Galapagos.
