Mitos en el valle de Mexicali: una cartografía de lo intangible

Abstract

As part of a wider research about evolutive cultural landscape in the Mexicali Valley (Baja California, Mexico), a survey was conducted by means of identifying the main myths in that rural area, the topics they deal with, as well as the location of the events they narrate. Information collected was processed through the use of geographical information systems (GIS) in order to obtain a thematic cartography of those myths which allows the visualization of areas of greater density (where there is a greater concentration of myths). The principal findings refer the absence of indigenous myths, the dominance of myths about ghosts, as well as the strong presence of sociological myths with pedagogical function, which guide spatial practices of the valley inhabitants
