Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) in young people is caused by both modifiable and non-modifiable factors, and social factors are involved in its development. OBJECTIVE: To reflect on the social determinants and labels of T2D in young people and how they can contribute to an understanding of the phenomenon under study and its prevention through sociocultural epidemiology. DEVELOPMENT: Initially, a hierarchical structure is created that encompasses different levels, such as the macro (age, education, income, socioeconomic position, social class, and ethnicity), the meso (social network, stress, and access to health services) and the micro (lifestyles). Subsequently, an analysis is conducted with respect to how social label constructions related to T2D are generated in young people. Finally, current health and social intervention measures are examined globally, and in Mexico specifically, to reduce risk behaviors linked to the development of T2D. CONCLUSION: T2D in young people represents a growing problem, and it is essential that prevention and health promotion policies aimed at this age group are developed and executed. It is also essential that nursing as a profession be involved in this area with the purpose of influencing the social determinants that impact T2D.
